Marketing: Email, Abandoned Cart & Social Channels

Shopify Email (built-in) or third-party apps let you send campaigns to your customer list — welcome series, promotions, and product launch announcements.

Email marketing basics

Shopify Email (built-in) or third-party apps let you send campaigns to your customer list — welcome series, promotions, and product launch announcements.

Segment your list before sending — new subscribers, repeat buyers, and inactive customers respond to different messages and offers.

Real-life example: Email marketing is like a shopkeeper mailing postcards to past customers about a new arrival — the ones who bought recently are more likely to open it than someone who never shopped there.

  • Welcome email — sent right after signup or first purchase
  • Promotional campaigns — sale announcements, new launches
  • Win-back emails — target customers who haven't ordered in months

Abandoned cart recovery

When a customer adds items to cart and starts checkout but leaves without paying, Shopify can automatically send a reminder email to bring them back.

Abandoned cart emails often include a direct link back to the exact cart, sometimes paired with a small discount to encourage completion.

Real-life example: An abandoned cart email is a shop assistant tapping a customer's shoulder as they walk out, saying 'you forgot these items at the counter'.

Tip: Keep the first abandoned cart email simple and friendly — save discount codes for the second reminder if the customer still hasn't returned.
Basic abandoned cart automation logic
Trigger: Checkout started, not completed within 1 hour
Action 1: Send email — "You left something in your cart"
Wait: 24 hours
Action 2 (if still not purchased): Send email with 10% off code
Checkout to order flow (where cart abandonment happens)

Selling on social channels

Shopify connects to social platforms as 'sales channels', letting you tag products in posts or run a synced product catalog without duplicating listings manually.

Because the catalog stays connected to your Shopify Admin, updating a price or stock count in one place reflects everywhere it's sold.

Real-life example: Social sales channels are like opening a small stall inside a friend's already-busy market — same stock room (your Shopify catalog), extra doors for customers to walk in from.

  • Connect your product catalog once, sell in multiple places
  • Price and inventory updates sync automatically
  • Useful for meeting customers where they already spend time
