Customers & Customer Accounts

Every buyer who checks out (or signs up) becomes a customer profile in your Admin, storing their contact info, order history, and total amount spent.

The Customers section

Every buyer who checks out (or signs up) becomes a customer profile in your Admin, storing their contact info, order history, and total amount spent.

You can manually add customers too — useful for phone orders or migrating a customer list from another platform.

Real-life example: The Customers list is like a shopkeeper's notebook of regulars — who bought what, how often, and how to reach them for the next sale.

  • Customer profile — name, email, address, order history
  • Tags — segment customers (VIP, wholesale, newsletter)
  • Total spent and order count shown automatically

Customer accounts vs guest checkout

Shopify lets customers check out as a guest (no account needed) or create an account to save addresses and view order history for next time.

Newer Shopify stores use 'Shopify-managed customer accounts', which sign customers in with a one-time code sent by email instead of a traditional password.

Real-life example: Guest checkout is like paying cash at a shop without leaving your details. A customer account is like joining the shop's loyalty club so your details are remembered next visit.

  • Guest checkout — faster, no signup friction
  • Customer accounts — saved addresses, faster repeat checkout, order tracking
  • Passwordless login via email code is the modern default flow

Customer segments and groups

Segments let you filter customers by behavior — like 'ordered in the last 30 days' or 'spent over ₹5000' — to target them with specific marketing later.

Combining tags and segments helps you treat different customer types differently, such as offering wholesale pricing via apps to a 'wholesale' tagged group.

Real-life example: Segments are like sorting a mailing list into 'regular customers', 'one-time buyers', and 'big spenders' so you send the right offer to the right group instead of one message to everyone.

Tip: Tag customers as you go (VIP, wholesale, influencer) — clean tagging today makes targeted marketing and segments much easier later.
Example customer segment filter
Segment: Recent High-Value Buyers
Conditions:
  - Number of orders >= 2
  - Amount spent >= 5000
  - Last order date within last 90 days
