The Shopify Analytics dashboard
The Analytics/Reports section shows sales trends, top products, traffic sources, and conversion rate — key numbers for understanding how your store is actually performing.
The dashboard updates using real order and session data, so you can compare this week against last week or track a specific campaign's impact.
Real-life example: Analytics is a shop's daily sales register plus a foot-traffic counter combined — you see not just how much was sold, but how many people walked in without buying.
- Total sales — revenue over a chosen time period
- Sessions — how many visits your storefront received
- Conversion rate — percentage of sessions that became an order
- Top products/collections — what's actually selling
Understanding conversion funnels
A conversion funnel tracks visitors through stages: viewed a product, added to cart, started checkout, completed purchase — showing exactly where people drop off.
A large drop between 'added to cart' and 'started checkout' often signals shipping cost surprises or a confusing cart page; a drop during checkout often signals payment or trust issues.
Real-life example: A funnel is like tracking how many people who pick up a shirt in a shop actually walk to the trial room, and how many of those actually reach the till — each stage loses a few people, and you want to know why.
1000 sessions
300 viewed a product (30%)
100 added to cart (10% of sessions)
40 started checkout (4% of sessions)
25 completed order (2.5% conversion rate)
Biggest drop: cart -> checkout (100 -> 40)
Action: check shipping cost visibility, trust badges, guest checkout optionActing on reports
Use 'Sales by traffic source' to see if Instagram, Google, or email brings the best customers, then invest more time where returns are strongest.
Regularly reviewing 'Sessions by device' matters too — if most traffic is mobile but conversion is low, your theme's mobile experience needs attention first.
Real-life example: Acting on reports is a shop owner noticing more footfall from one street entrance than another, then focusing window displays and signage on the busier side.
- Compare traffic sources to see which channels convert best
- Check device breakdown — optimize for wherever most customers browse
- Review 'abandoned checkouts' report alongside cart recovery emails
