Chapter Overview

A balanced equation has equal atoms of each element on both sides.

Chemical reactions rearrange atoms to form new substances. Learn to write balanced equations, identify combination, decomposition, displacement, double displacement, and redox reactions with everyday examples.

Types of Reactions

  • Combination: A + B → AB (e.g. 2Mg + O₂ → 2MgO)
  • Decomposition: AB → A + B (electrolysis, heat, light)
  • Displacement: A + BC → AC + B (more reactive displaces less)
  • Double displacement: AB + CD → AD + CB (precipitate/gas/water)

Redox

  • Oxidation: gain of oxygen or loss of hydrogen/electrons
  • Reduction: loss of oxygen or gain of hydrogen/electrons
  • Oxidising agent gets reduced; reducing agent gets oxidised
