Chapter Overview

Fractions represent parts of a whole. You learn proper, improper, and mixed fractions, equivalent fractions, comparison, and operations — addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

Types of Fractions

  • Proper: numerator < denominator (e.g. 3/5)
  • Improper: numerator ≥ denominator (e.g. 7/4)
  • Mixed: whole number + proper fraction (e.g. 1¾)
  • Like fractions have same denominator

Equivalent and Simplest Form

  • Multiply/divide numerator and denominator by same non-zero number
  • Simplest form: HCF of numerator and denominator is 1
  • Cross-multiplication to compare unlike fractions

Operations

Add/subtract like

a/c ± b/c = (a±b)/c

Multiply

a/b × c/d = ac/bd

Divide

a/b ÷ c/d = a/b × d/c

Solved Examples

Step-by-step solutions — read each step before checking the final answer.

Example 1: Add Unlike Fractions

Add 2/3 and 1/4.

  1. 1LCM of 3,4 = 12
  2. 22/3 = 8/12
  3. 31/4 = 3/12
  4. 48/12 + 3/12 = 11/12

Answer

11/12

Example 2: Mixed to Improper

Convert 2¾ to improper fraction.

  1. 1(2×4 + 3)/4
  2. 2= 11/4

Answer

11/4

Key Points to Remember

  • Always convert to like fractions before adding/subtracting
  • Invert and multiply for division
  • Mixed numbers useful in daily life (2½ kg flour)

Exam Tips

  • Show LCM step for unlike fractions
  • Simplify final answer to lowest terms
