Decimals extend the place value system to tenths, hundredths, and beyond. You compare decimals, convert to fractions, and perform all four operations — vital for money and measurement.
Place Value in Decimals
- Tenths (0.1), hundredths (0.01), thousandths (0.001)
- 1.25 = 1 + 2/10 + 5/100
- Trailing zeros after decimal don't change value: 2.5 = 2.50
Comparing Decimals
- Compare whole parts first, then tenths, hundredths, ...
- Add zeros to equalise decimal places if needed
- 0.7 > 0.65 because 0.70 > 0.65
Operations
Add/subtract: align decimal points vertically. Multiply: count total decimal places in factors. Divide: move decimal point in divisor and dividend equally.
