Chapter Overview

Equal groups must contain the same number of objects.

Counting in Groups introduces skip-counting and equal groups. Children arrange objects in twos, fives, or tens, then count the groups instead of counting every object one by one.

Making Equal Groups

  • Pairing means making groups of 2.
  • Five groups of 2 contain 10 objects altogether.
  • Objects left after equal grouping are called leftovers.

Skip-Counting

  • Count by 2s as 2, 4, 6, 8, 10.
  • Count by 5s as 5, 10, 15, 20.
  • Skip-counting is faster when every group has the same size.
