Chapter Overview
The minus sign (−) means take away. The answer to a subtraction is called the difference.
Subtraction means taking away, finding what remains, or comparing two groups. Children model subtraction with objects and pictures, then connect it to backward movement on a number line.
Ways to Subtract
- Begin with the whole group and remove the stated number.
- Cross out pictures, then count what remains.
- On a number line, subtraction means jumping to the left.
- To compare groups, match objects and count the unmatched ones.
Subtraction Facts
- Subtracting zero keeps a number unchanged: 7 − 0 = 7.
- Subtracting a number from itself gives zero: 5 − 5 = 0.
- Subtracting one gives the number just before: 8 − 1 = 7.
- Words such as left, remain, take away, fewer, and difference suggest subtraction.
