Chapter Overview

Zero means there are no objects. It comes before 1 on the number line.

Numbers 1 to 9 introduces counting, number names, numerals, zero, and comparison. Children learn that a number tells how many objects are in a group and that the last number counted gives the total.

Counting and Number Names

  • Count each object once by pointing or moving it.
  • The numerals are 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9.
  • Number names include one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, and nine.
  • The number after a number is one more; the number before it is one less.

Comparing and Ordering

  • A group with more objects has the greater number.
  • A group with fewer objects has the smaller number.
  • Equal groups have the same number of objects.
  • Ascending order goes from smallest to greatest; descending order goes from greatest to smallest.
