Terms and Coefficients

  • Term: product of numbers and variables (e.g. 5xy)
  • Coefficient: numerical factor (in 5xy, coefficient of xy is 5)
  • Like terms: same variable part (3x and 7x)

Addition and Subtraction

Only like terms can be combined. 3x + 2y stays as is; 3x + 5x = 8x.

Evaluation

  • Substitute given values for variables
  • Follow order of operations (BODMAS)
