Chapter Overview
A group of similar cells organised to perform a specific function is a tissue. Plant tissues are classified as meristematic and permanent; animal tissues into epithelial, connective, muscular, and nervous.
Plant Tissues
- Meristematic: dividing cells at tips (apical), girth (lateral), bases (intercalary)
- Simple permanent: parenchyma (storage), collenchyma (flexible support), sclerenchyma (dead, lignified)
- Complex: xylem (water conduction), phloem (food transport)
Animal Tissues

- Connective: blood, bone, cartilage, adipose — binds and supports
- Muscular: striated (voluntary), smooth (involuntary), cardiac
- Nervous: neurons transmit electrical impulses
